How to speed up your iOS 7 device

Late September saw a major update when Apple launched their latest OS for all the iDevice users.

Though it did see a great response and millions of users upgraded their iDevices to iOS 7, but lately we have been seeing a many user complaining about older devices (such as iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and older iPads) getting slower.

Most affected features are Typing on the iDevices and slowing down of interface animations.

I personally use a iPhone 4 and can confirm that 'Yes! The iOS 7 update has actually slowed down my device and I do face issues typing SMS, Mails, etc.'

Solution to this 'Slowness'

Well, I did some research online (read as - tried multiple solutions available on the net, reinstalled and reset my phone multiple times, tried my own tricks) and here are a few solutions that are available on the internet and how they affect your iDevice. Please note that I have tested these solutions on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S only.

Solution 1

I guess this is the most commonly available solution available on the internet and it does work well. Here is what you have to do:

Go to Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data

Now toggle this option to 'Off'. This will switch off the Documents and Data backup from your device to iCloud. This simple feature will make your device run as normal and the 'slowness' will vanish.

But, this method has a disadvantage - you will no longer be able to take advantage of iCould backup. So, it is a trade-off between speed and backup.

Solution 2

With the latest update to iOS came new feature such as Transparent interface, Animation effects, etc. There is another feature which allows you to select which Apps can refresh themselves in the background.

This feature also slows down your device significantly and also reduces the battery life. You should enable this feature only for those apps which you really need. I also tried this method and switched off all Background Refresh for all the Apps.

Here are the steps to deactivate Background Refresh:

Go to Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh

Here you can disable the refresh options for Apps as per your requirement.

This feature alone brought back my iPhone to it's normal speed and the typing was again fun!

Solution 3

There is another feature that Apple introduced with the latest update. This feature allows you for automatic download of updates and App updates. This feature too runs in the background and makes your device slower.

Turn this feature off by following these steps:

Go to Settings -> iTunes and App Store

Anyways, if there is any update available for an app, you will get to know. And you can later at some time update that. At least this will make your device run faster.

Solution which I use

Now, the question is which solution which best and which doesn't.

I have personally tried all these methods and I can say that they individually work well. But, if you do that, you loose on that particular feature.

Hence, I use a combination on if these. Here is what u have dine to make my phone faster:
- Though I have kept Documents and Data backup Switched On in iCloud, but I have disabled use of Cellular Data for this feature. I do need to backup my Whatsapp chats and hence dis not deactivate this feature. Now, whenever I am connected to Wi-Fi, this feature kicks in and takes the backup
- I have kept background refresh 'Off' for all the apps, but not for News App that I use. This allows me to have a faster device without loosing a great feature
- Lastly, I have disabled Automatic Updates completely. I don't want my cellular data to be used as I have a limited download and that too at a high cost. I don't want ti waste that in Automatic Updates. I have Wi-Fi at home and I update my phone with that whenever required

Before you apply on of these methods, do remember to analyze first what feature you need the most and which one you can forgo. Then accordingly you should follow the suitable method or a combination of above solutions.

Do you know any other methods other than what we suggested here? Please do share you tips and tricks in the comments section, to make our iDevices work faster

Why I do not believe in 'Quotes'

Ever wondered why were these quotes even quoted? I do wonder!

I have never been a big fan of these quotes; they rather confuse me every time I hear one.

It seems 'Quotes' have a big time issue of communication gap. They don't sync up with each other quite often. For example, the other day I met a quote - "All good things come to those who wait". But by evening, I happened to notice another quote roaming around - "Time and tide wait for none".

Now tell me, if - "Then pen is mightier than sword", then why does "Actions speak louder than words"? Just because these 2 quotes never spoke to each other and are creating confusions, which one to be followed!!!

Similarly, once my boss called me to room to talk about a new Project that our MD had allocated to our team. The deadlines were too tight. I took the download and I spoke about timelines, I said - "Slow and steady wine the race". But who knew my boss will introduce me to another quote - "Time waits for none".

The meet didn't just end there. I remembered another quote and said - "When in doubt, ask!". But in this, I got reply - "you can judge one by the questions one ask!". Now, did I want to get judged!!?"

How do we do over the top

This is how we do over-the-top!!

Even I was an entrepreneur...

It was in 2007, when I started doing my CFA from ICFAI. It is a long-distance education program and we used to have weekend classes, and sometimes after working hours. That time I was bitten by the owning-a-website bug and Dhakkanz had not born yet.

One fine day, post our class, our teacher asked us if anyone would want to take a responsibility of making an emailing list for sharing the sample papers that he would send. I found that as an opportunity and took that up. Firstly it staretd with sharing the papers which our teacher used to send. Later it became a way to sharing queries and answers. But slowly I felt the need of making a group email ID which could be used to send emails and their replies to and people could subscribe. That time around 15-16 students had shared their email IDs with me.

Then I got to know about the Google Groups. One could make a group and get a unique email ID which could be used for sharing via emails without disclosing the email IDs to whole group. I started 'CFAStudentsGroup' group on Google Groups. There were emails getting shared, pages were written, people even started sharing job positions and that became quite known within the CFA students of ICFAI, but limited to mostly Northern geography of India. The count had risen to somewhat 100-125. I used to have discussions with my friends and other students as to how could I bring more value to students. What is the need of the hour and what is that will make this concept fly high. And franky, I also wanted to make some money out of it.

I then started exploring the web for alternatives. I had heard of blogging that time, but had no resources (read as: writers who could write) for the same and I myself wasn't too confident on my financial articles. Also, with what I gauged from my discussions with several students, the need of the hour was 'something or somewhere students could go and find resolutions to their queries, do discussions and also spend some light time'. THAT was another 'opportunity'. That was the time when I thought of starting a Forum for CFA students.

I not just wanted to start something organized, but something genuine. But this meant spending some money and this was the time when I actually spent some money. I bought a domain and hired a some hosting space for launching my Forum. It was called www.CFA-Forum.com. And that was the launch of my own website. I guess it was 2008 already.

It became quite popular. The website gained lot of traction from lot of students. There was sharing, there was discussion and there was misuse too. The visitor count ticking numbers in 100s. There were times when unknown faces would greet me in the Delhi's Metro while travelling for classes who would know me as the owner of the website (I have no idea how did people recognize me, as I had never shared my picture anywhere publicly). The popularity was also reaching those students who were doing their CFA from the US Institute. Just to give you some background, CFA from US is very popular and both institutions at that time were fighting hard over the term 'CFA', which finally got won by the US Institute. Now, obviously the students of US Institute used look down upon my website and even mocked about we being Naive. But that was alright. I was more happy knowing that I had my intentions clean and sharing the knowledge, with indifference to which institute one was studying from. And, I was successful to the limits of my resources.

Here is an archived page of my forum that I pulled out today, first time after 5 years :-)

Managing the website was not easy. I had to spend a lot of time (post my working hours) on internet filtering out the scum (bad posts), replying to students, making other students (who were friends) to reply to the posts and even sometimes to keep dead-posts alive.

During this time I learnt a lot of Forums, their technical aspects, plugins, coding etc. Believe me, I had never worked on even HTML before this. And I could now tweak codes to mod the websites. It was a great learning and that helped me a lot in my future endeavors.

What happened finally? I had made one mistake, which many enterpreneurs do in their initial times. Doing a proper study. I did the same. When my website gained traction from the students of AIMR (the US Institute), it also rang some bells at the Institute itself. I am not sure if it actually got that popular or some student did the mischief. Within 6-7 months of launch of the website, I received a notice from AIMR's legal department that I could not use the term 'CFA' commercially or otherwise as it is a registered trademark. If at all I continued doing the same, I could be sued. I was shocked. I had no intenstions of doing that. My only aim was to help the students.

I was both sad and happy. Sad, because I did not get support anyone to fight against that. I alone could not do it and frankly had no Idea about what shall I do. One of my lawyer friends also suggested to pull down the website as AIMR's claim was true. I even contacted ICFAI University, if they could help me with this, but in vain. I met some people from the university, but they refused to help directly. I even thought of selling of the website, but that too didn't happen. Within few days I realized time had come and I would have to shut down the website. But yes, I was happy. I was happy to have achieved this much. From an enterpreneureal aspect, I had done ok, if not good.

So, that was the story of my enterpreneurial efforts. I am still bugged with the same bug, but haven't been able to do anything big, other than my Dhakkanz blog. Even this blog faced some bad luck.

I am waiting for the right time, right opportunity and availability of right resources. I know I will do something again.
